PLAY BALL’!”  Finally its here! Opening day. Some great games were played today and here is a quick recap on all the games played…

Mets 7 – Nationals 9:  The Mets jusssst couldn’t hold their lead through the 9th and 10th and lost to the rival Nats 9-7. Mets pitcher Dillon Gee made his 1st career Opening Day start in the majors in this game. He pitched 6 innings and let up 4 runs and struck out 5 in his pretty good outing. New Mets relief pitcher Jose Valverde was the only bright spot for the Mets bullpen yesterday with 3 K’s over the course of 1 inning.  Nats ace Stephen Strausburg struck out 10 Mets in his 6 inning outing but let up 4 runs in his ND. The Mets got a quick 3 run homer from LF Andrew Brown in the 1st inning too lead 3 zip. Nats 1B Adam LaRoche homered and brought in  SS Ian Desmond to trail NY by 1. The Mets kept piling up the runs with Eric Young Jr. hitting a sac fly and scoring catcher Travis d’Arnaud. The Nationals tied the game up in the 7th with Anthony Rendon doubling and scoring Ian Desmond. Then Denard Span was walked with the bases juiced and the Nats tied it at 4.  The Mets had the win in their hands when OF Juan Lagares  hit a solo homer and the Mets led 5-4. Mets closer Bobby Parnell could of saved the game for NY in the top of the 9th but Denard Span tied it up with a 1 run double. The 10th inning didn’t go so well for the Mets when Ian Desmond scored Jason Werth on a sac-fly and Anthony Rendon hit a 3 run blast to put the game out of reach for the Mets. David Wright hit a homer to put the game at 9-7 in the 9th but that wasn’t enough to win. Jeurys Familia was charged with the loss while Aaron Barrett got the win. Denard Span and Anthony Rendon combined for 6 RBI’s in the win. New Met Curtis Granderson had 3 strikeouts in the loss (maybe 1st game jitters). Andrew Brown and David Wright combined for 5 RBI’s in the loss also. The Mets play the Nats tomorrow with new Met Bartolo Colon pitching.

 The Pirates won off 2b Neil Walker‘s walk-off homer in 10 innings vs. the Cubbies yesterday. Pirates pitcher Francisco Liriano threw 10 K’s and 0 runs in a terrific outing and Pirates win. Alex Gonzalez hit a walk-off single in the Tigers 4-3 win over the Royals. Gonzalez had 2 hits and 2 RBI’s in the win and his Tigers debut. The Phillies routed the Rangers 14-10 off of Jimmy Rollins’s Grand salomi. Ben Revere also had 3 rbi’s in the win. There were a lot of great pitching performances in low scoring games as you will see with the scores. The MLB won in 1 thing yesterday, the new replay system did very well with 5 successful reviews.                       You can see the scores of all the games on my scoreboard on my homepage!
