The Mets improved their record to 6-7 with a nice 7-3 win over the D-Backs last night. Zach Wheeler had his 3rd start for the Mets this year striking out 3 and letting up 2 runs in his 6.1 innings of work. Carlos Torres got the save for the Mets coming in for 2.2 innings and throwing 2 K’s. First Baseman Lucas Duda was the star of the game and had 4 hits and 2 RBI’s in the win. Third Baseman David Wright had 2 RBI’s on a single and a sacrifice ground-out.
For Arizona, all of their runs were batted in by Catcher Miguel Montero on a double, single and sac-fly. Josh Collomenter took the loss for the D-Backs with 3 earned runs allowed in only 4 innings of work. The relief pitching was just as disappointing for the D-Backs letting up 4 runs in the loss.
The Mets took 2 scares in this game from OF Curtis Granderson and OF Juan Lagares. Lagares was pulled from the game in the 7th from a strained hammy and Granderson was injured after he made a spectacular catch in the outfield but dropped the ball after colliding with the OF wall and stayed in the game but left to reported rib and left forearm injuries. Grandy may be back soon but the electric hitting Lagares may be out longer but his status is unknown. OF Chris Young can’t return till Friday but he looks ready after going a amazing 5-5 with 2 homers in the Mets triple-A Las Vegas game.
The Mets will look for another win to put themselves at 500 for the season, they will play tonight vs. the D-Backs at 9:40 in Arizona with Mets pitcher Jenrry Mejia facing off against Bronson Arroyo.
On a special note, today is Jackie Robinson Day. On this day in 1947, the great Jackie Robinson broke the color barrier of the MLB to let african-americans enjoy the great game of baseball as pro players. All players wear Jackie’s #42 in their games on this day to pay their respects to this baseball icon. This is the 1st year no player in the MLB has Robinson’s number as their permanent one. Legendary Yankees closer Mariano Rivera was the last current player to wear the iconic #42 after retiring this past year…
